We invite you to join us tomorrow, Friday, June 4, 2021 for a ribbon cutting and ground breaking ceremony for the Marquette Greenway Trail.
This event, celebrating the Marquette Greenway Trail portions largely made possible by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb’s Next Level Trails grant program, begins at 11 a.m. with a press conference, followed by a community bike/walk with refreshments at 12 p.m., and will be held at the Marquette Greenway Trailhead Fisherman’s Lot, just west of the Burns Harbor Fire Station, 308 Navajo Trail, Burns Harbor. Parking is available at the Burns Harbor Town Hall, 1240 North Boo Road, with overflow on-street parking along North Boo Road. Attendees are asked not to park along Navajo Trail.
In 2019, Burns Harbor was awarded a $1.73 million Next Level Trails Grant for a 1.5 mile segment of Marquette Greenway. The ribbon cutting will mark the trail section opening. Earlier this year, the City of Portage received a $2.5 million Next Level Trails Grant to construct a segment of the trail in 2022 from Deer Trail Park in Portage to the Burns Harbor town limit. Portage officials will receive that check during Friday's event. When completed, the Marquette Greenway Trail will allow hikers, bikers and others to traverse from the Indiana Dunes National Park's West Beach through Portage, Burns Harbor and Porter to the east unit of the IDNP.
The press conference speakers will include Dr. Rebecca Holwerda, Senior Operations Director, Office of the Governor; Paul Labovitz, Superintendent, Indiana Dunes National Park; Nick Loving, Town of Burns Harbor Town Council President; Sue Lynch, Mayor of the City of Portage and Frank J. Mrvan, Congressman, US House of Representatives, District #1.
