Mr. Arney has served as a volunteer firefighter for the Town of Burns Harbor since July 6, 1988. Later, he was hired as a part-time Street Department laborer in January 1995. His role expanded in June 2008 when he was hired as the full-time department head over the Fire Department, Building Department and Sanitation Department.
Today, he serves the Town officially as Fire Chief/Building Commissioner/Sanitation Superintendent. Most recently, Mr. Arney was named the MS 4 Coordinator. Additionally, he holds numerous certifications from the Department of Homeland Security, including: Building/Fire Inspector, EMT, Firefighter I/II, Instructor II/III, Fire Officer I, Strategy & Tactics, Hazmat Operations, Driver Operator, C.E.V.O. Instructor, Dive Master as well as remains as an active dive team member. Further, he voluntarily pursues continuing education on the Indiana Building and Fire codes.
Born in Gary, he moved closer to family in Burns Harbor in 1982. He grew up in Town and came to love Burns Harbor, where he continues to live today with his wife and two children.
When asked about Burns Harbor's future, Mr. Arney envisions to be part of the Town's growth doubling in size over the years. "I love the passion of the community and all its residents that want to protect the small town-feeling and will always work together to preserve that passion," he said. "I am so thankful to Burns Harbor for letting me be such a large part of our Town and continue assisting with its future. I will always make time to assist the community, its residents and businesses as well as any future businesses wanting to come to our great Town."
